|||||||||
The Library at the American International School / Dhaka was completed in 2001 and is a focal point of the school and school community. Open seven days, sixty hours a week, the library serves more than 700 students and teachers, their families, and ninety support staff. The eleven thousand square foot library is on two floors – an elementary library upstairs and a high school library downstairs – and is located just off the school’s main rotunda.Library staff includes two librarians, three library assistants and a part time Circulation Aide. |
With a book collection of 35,000 volumes including a significant collection of materials on South Asia, a reference collection of 1100 books, and 3,000 volumes in the AV collection, this is the largest English language library in Bangladesh. The annual library budget provides for collection development that supports the AIS/D curriculum, recreational reading, and independent research of library patrons.
The library receives 110 English language magazines and ten magazines in Bangla. Three English and three Bangla newspapers are delivered daily. The library subscribes to EBSCO, an electronic database containing current and back issues of hundreds of journals and other research materials. The library catalog is automated and can be accessed online through the library website. The library is equipped with eleven public access computers, all connected to the Internet. Library staff maintains and distributes AV hardware throughout the school. With an active program of story hours, book talks, and research instruction the library is a busy place during the school day. Classes Pre-school through Grade 5 visit the library at scheduled times each week for story time and book exchange. Middle and high school classes use the library on an as needed basis. AIS/D parents and school staff are entitled to free library memberships and borrowing privileges. Each weekend the library welcomes families and provides a community library atmosphere with puzzles, simple games, and art supplies for children and their families. |
