The American International School/Dhaka (AIS/D) is an independent,
coeducational day school which offers a college preparatory educational
program from Prekindergarten through Grade 12 for students of
all nationalities. The School was founded in 1972. The school
year comprises 2 semesters extending from August 15 to December
15 and from January 9 to June 9.
Organization: The School is governed
by a 9-member School Board elected for 2-year terms.
The Board is comprised of parents or legal guardians
of students enrolled in the School. The U.S. Ambassador
appoints a non-voting representative to the Board.
The School is not incorporated in the United States.
Curriculum: The academic program
is reflective of a quality college preparatory, U.S. independent
or suburban public school. Classes are self-contained through
Grade 5. Instruction is in English. French and Spanish are
taught as foreign languages starting in Middle School. Specialist
courses include English-as-a-Second-Language, physical education,
computer, art, music, and South Asian studies. High School
students can achieve the Advanced Placement International Diploma
before they graduate. AIS/D will introduce the International
Baccalaureate Diploma program in August 2006. Strong sports,
fine arts, and extracurricular programs are maintained. The
School is accredited by the New England Association of Schools
and Colleges and the Council of International Schools.
Faculty: In the 2005-2006 school year, there
are 74 full-time and 7 part-time faculty members, including
69 U.S. citizens, 3 host-country nationals, and 10 third-country
nationals. A Superintendent, 3 Principals, an Assistant Principal
K-12, a Director of Curriculum and Instruction, 3 Counselors,
a Business Manager, and a Facilities Consultant make up the
administrative team.
Enrollment: At the beginning of the 2005-2006
school year, enrollment was 650 (PK-grade 5: 315; grades 6-8:
152; and grades 9-12: 183). Of the total, 149 were U.S. citizens,
70 host-country nationals, and 431 third-country nationals.
Of the U.S. enrollment, 48 were dependents of U.S. government
direct-hire or contract employees, 31 of U.S. business and
foundation employees, 23 of AIS/D teachers, and 47 of private
U.S. citizens.
Facilities: The School occupies a 4 1/2-acre
campus in a residential suburb of Dhaka. The campus facility
consists of 78 general classrooms, 6 science laboratories,
3 art studios, 2 music rooms, 2 drama rooms, 4 computer laboratories,
a library/media center, 3 gymnasiums, a weight room, a heated
pool, 350-seat theatre, cafeteria, and office suites. Sports
facilities include two playgrounds and one athletic field.
AIS/D maintains a fleet of air-conditioned buses for all student
transportation.
Finances: In the 2005-2006 school year, 98% of the School's
income derives from regular day school tuition. Annual tuition
rates are as follows: PK 3/4H: $4,150; PK4F: $6,500; KG-Grade
5: $9,850; Grade 6: $12,310; Grade 7: $11,800; Grade 8: $12,660;
Grade 9: $13,490; Grade 10: $13,490; Grade 11: $13,590; and
Grade 12: $13,790. There is an admission processing fee of
$50 for all plus a registration fee of $3,450 from K-12. The
yearly capital fees for this year are PK: $600, K-Grade 3:
$1,540, and grades 4-12: $1,900. Additionally, an interest-
bearing, fully refundable building bond of $3,000 must be purchased
for each student. These fees are payable in U.S. dollars. (All
