Elementary School Library

Welcome to the AISD Elementary Library! We are happy to have you here and hope you and your children will always find something fun and interesting to tickle your eyeballs. We encourage parents to read with their children on a daily basis, or have your child read to you – what a great way to show the importance of reading!

Things to know:
Library Class - your child will come to the library for 30 to 40 minutes once per week. During this time, Miss Magenheimer and Miss Charmaine will read stories, teach proper book care and library behavior, teach library and research skills including how to use the Destiny Online Catalog, and teach how to find books throughout the library. We want to make this time as enjoyable as possible so that the library becomes a happy place they feel comfortable in.

Primary years program – Classes come to the library in addition to their regularly scheduled time to work on research and inquiry skills connected with their PYP Units of Inquiry. The AISD Elementary Library has a well-stocked collection of quality resources that are used extensively by teachers and students to enhance these units. There is also a growing collection of Spanish and Bangla language books and we are building an international collection of books in other languages as well.

Check-out – 1st through 5th grade students are allowed to check out 4 items such as books, magazines, or books on cassette/CD each week. Kindergarten and PreK students may check out 2 items. Books must be returned before new ones may be checked out. It is a good idea to keep library books in a special place at home and explain to ayahs and cleaning staff that they should be kept separate from other books. Keeping them in the child’s book bag or backpack will also ensure that they are there on library day. Please keep books away from food and drink!

Lost or Damaged Books – we understand that accidents happen and things do get lost. If a book gets lost or damaged beyond repair, we will ask you to pay the cost of the book plus 25% shipping and handling. Our books are shipped from the USA twice per year, which makes it quite difficult to replace copies. Many of our books are now out of print and cannot be replaced. When a book is lost, that means other children in the school will not be able to read that book. If your child checks out a magazine, please keep it in the provided envelope to help protect it from wear.

Elementary Library Hours – The library is open Sunday - Thursday from 7:15am to 4pm and Fridays/Saturdays from 10am to 2pm. This is a great time to come in and check out new books for yourself and your children. Families may check out up to 10 books, so it’s a good time to stock up on books for the week.

Keep on Reading!
