Service learning is an educational method by which participants
learn and develop important dispositions such as empathy through
active participation in service that is conducted in and meets
the needs of a community. The overall aim of the program is to
help our students acquire the knowledge, skills, and attitudes
to develop into international citizens and independent learners.
Service learning is integrated into the Middle School curriculum
and is organized through classes or through grade level advisory
teams. The Middle School has developed a special connection with
the Families For Children orphanage, and many of the service
learning projects support the children in this local orphanage.
By participating in the AIS/Dhaka Middle School
Service Learning Program, students will
-
develop a sense of empathy as they participate in hands-on service
activities;
-
work closely with teachers, advisors, and peers to develop and
implement the service learning projects;
-
value diversity and develop intercultural communication skills;
-
develop project goals
based upon identified needs;
-
problem-solve and work cooperatively to achieve goals;
-
reflect upon the results and/or achievements of projects;
-
begin to develop a life-long sense of commitment to their community.
AIS/Dhaka Middle School students “serve to learn and learn
to serve”.
