Service Learning

Service learning is an educational method by which participants learn and develop important attitudes and dispositions, such as empathy and open-mindedness, through active participation in service that is conducted in and meets the needs of a community. The overall aim of the program is to help our students acquire the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to develop into stewards of a just and sustainable world. Service learning is integrated into the Middle School curriculum and is organized through classes and through grade level advisory teams. The Middle School has developed a special connection with the Families For Children (FFC) orphanage, and many of the service learning projects support the children in this local orphanage. Middle school students also participate in special projects to promote environmental sustainability.

By participating in the AIS/Dhaka Middle School Service Learning Program, students will

  • develop a sense of empathy as they participate in hands-on service activities;
  • work closely with teachers, advisers, and peers to develop and implement the service learning projects;
  • value diversity and develop inter-cultural communication skills;
  • develop project goals based upon identified needs;
  • problem-solve and work cooperatively to achieve goals;
  • reflect upon the results and/or achievements of projects;
  • begin to develop a life-long sense of commitment to their community.
